A necklace puzzle solved through topology

A long-form animated math explainer makes a fair-division puzzle tangible, then builds a surprising geometric route to its proof.

Field notes / why it works

By 0:35, the narration promises a link between a countable necklace puzzle and a sphere theorem; 0:23–0:35 is a replay peak. Bead colours, quantities and cuts update in place through 3:05, then a sphere-and-plane scene at 3:06 resets attention. The measured opening uses only five certain cuts but 43 internal graphic changes across six minutes, so the explanation stays visually active without frantic editing.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A calm, densely narrated math animation promises that two remote ideas will connect. It makes a small, countable puzzle vivid, states a difficult general claim, then temporarily leaves that puzzle to build a continuous geometric tool. The delayed connection is the engine.

Why it works

  • The open loop is explicit by 0:16–0:35: the narrator names both the necklace puzzle and a sphere theorem, then promises their connection. The replay peak at 0:23–0:35 coincides with that promise.
  • Abstract quantities become objects: four jewel colours and their counts appear at 0:53–1:04; partitions and matching piles change in place through 3:05, while the voice gives the rule.
  • A hard reset at 3:06–3:17 moves from coloured beads to a sphere and plane, renewing attention. The theorem setup at 3:40–3:52 is another replay peak.

PaceIn measured 6:00: 6 detector shots, 5 certain cuts (0.8/min), 3 uncertain changes (up to 1.3 cuts/min); 43 internal visual steps, about 8 total picture changes/min; average detector shot 60.0 s, median 43.0 s. These are long animated scenes, not static frames.
Script1,124 recognized words in measured opening; 189 wpm overall, 225 wpm during speech; 49 sentences averaging 22.9 words; 3 questions; 3.4 instances of “you” per 100 words.
VoiceOne low-register, animated, conversational educator; no on-camera person.
On screenNearly all motion graphics: black canvas, bead diagrams, cartoon symbol characters, cyan 3D sphere/plane, then globe and graph.
CaptionsNo running subtitles in sampled frames. Sparse serif headings and small diagram labels appear at relevant concepts.
SoundContinuous low tonal bed, measured about 16.7 dB below speech; no clear cut-synced effects. −16.9 LUFS integrated in the measured opening.
StructureConnection promise → concrete puzzle → general claim → unrelated-looking geometric detour → theorem/example → proof bridge. Later chapter markers: continuous version 9:15, connection 13:19, higher dimensions 17:30.
