Why Time Has an Arrow

A rapid hand-drawn science explainer turns an abstract physics puzzle into timelines, particle sketches and a rising entropy graph.

Field notes / why it works

The visible hand begins drawing at 0:00.25, so the page has motion before speech starts at 0:02.3. One clear diagram carries each turn: timeline at 0:14, rising graph at 0:45–0:52, and competing possibilities at 0:59–1:20. The answer near 1:20 opens into a larger consequence, while the 0:51–0:53 graph-to-time connection is the most-replayed stretch.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A low-register, animated narrator explains a counterintuitive science question while a visible hand builds simple black-marker diagrams on white paper. The argument moves from a familiar rule to an apparent contradiction, tests two explanations, then zooms out to an existential implication; the visual is drawn at roughly the moment its noun is spoken.

Why it works

  • The opening gives the eye an action to follow before speech: marker and hand arrive at 0:00.25, while narration starts at 0:02.3. The logo resolves before the first claim.
  • Abstract claims become spatial drawings: a timeline at 0:14–0:25, a disorder graph at 0:45–0:52, then two alternative graph shapes at 1:00–1:18.
  • A genuinely unresolved question at 0:57 drives the middle. The two options get a named answer at 1:18–1:21, then the scale expands to the universe through 2:49.

Script615 spoken words; 188 wpm overall, 208 wpm while speaking; 32 sentences, about 19 words each.
VoiceOne energetic, low-register, conversational narrator; precise but playful emphasis.
On screenAlmost entirely top-down live-action whiteboard drawing; small brand title and end card. No presenter face or b-roll.
CaptionsNo speech subtitles. Handwritten diagram labels and occasional titles carry only key terms.
SoundQuiet tonal instrumental bed under close narration; no reliable cut-synced effects. −14 LUFS integrated; measured +0.1 dBFS true peak.
StructureBrand prelude → paradox → concrete law/example → two-option test → answer → cosmic consequence → recap → credits and series CTA. Core answer begins about 1:19; CTA begins about 2:53.
