The Data Visualization Colour Test

A flat-motion explainer lets viewers struggle with a number grid, then uses one colour change to make its point instantly visible.

Field notes / why it works

The 0:26–0:36 number-grid challenge makes viewers experience the scanning problem before the same grid reveals the answer through colour at 0:36–0:41. Later diagrams assign colour, size, and orientation separate jobs around 1:00–1:14, so the lesson scales from one trick to a usable system. Only six measured shots span 102.5 seconds, but repeated dots, circles, and internal graphic changes keep the argument moving.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A narrator poses a conceptual question over spare vector animation, gives viewers a tiny task, then changes one visual variable so the answer becomes obvious. The film turns that proof into a wider principle and ends by applying it to several kinds of information. The promise arrives as a question by 0:05 and becomes concrete at 0:26.

Why it works

  • The viewer participates: a black number grid at 0:26–0:35 is hard to scan; recolouring selected digits at 0:36–0:45 makes the lesson felt before it is explained.
  • Each abstract noun gets a graphic: “colour” has highlighted digits at 0:41, “size” has differently scaled cubes at 1:02, and “orientation” has plotted lines at 1:07.
  • Repeated circles, dots, thin guides, and a restricted palette make six long shots feel continuous despite only five measured cuts over 102.5 seconds.
