The Truth-Test Interview

A retro polygraph interview turns product confidence into a tense, funny branded short through long pauses and rapid reaction inserts.

Field notes / why it works

The first cut waits until 0:13.2, letting two figures cross a huge orange stage before the polygraph is revealed. Then 46 cuts over 79.8 seconds alternate questions, confident replies and analog chart inserts; the most-replayed 0:40.0–0:40.8 moment holds on the chart during a contentious answer. A late pause around 1:06–1:14 sets up the final verdict and logo.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A deadpan interviewer tests a self-assured subject with a vintage polygraph. The questions move from harmless identification to product confidence and prickly, culturally specific challenges. Sparse staging makes every line and tiny chart movement feel consequential; the final verdict becomes the brand sign-off.

Why it works

  • The first 13.17 s are one locked, orange wide shot with no cut: two small people cross an enormous empty stage. Speech arrives at 1.92 s, and the truth-test premise becomes explicit around 0:07–0:12.
  • Once the machine appears at 0:13, the edit accelerates to 46 cuts over 79.8 s (34.6/min), alternating faces, hands and graph needles. The first product claim gets its compact answer at 0:33–0:34.
  • The most-replayed 0:40.0–0:40.8 segment holds on the chart as a pointed sports answer lands. A machine that might expose a lie turns ordinary interview answers into visual suspense.
