The Sun at True Scale

A quick whiteboard astronomy explainer turns a tiny Earth–Sun diagram into a full-frame scale reveal, then derives a surprising physics connection.

Field notes / why it works

A two-circle drawing states the visual puzzle by 0:03, while sparse lines and arrows let each new number land without clutter. At 0:15.8 a tiny Earth comparison becomes a full-frame Sun image, matching the strongest replay peak at 0:15.0–0:16.3; the 1:03–1:39 section turns the size trick into a broader physics payoff.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A fast, curious narrator opens on an everyday visual coincidence, then changes the viewer's sense of scale with sparse drawings and a photographic reveal. Each apparent coincidence becomes a reason to ask a deeper question; the last answer connects the opening observation to a general principle.

Why it works

  • The first claim arrives with the first spoken words at 0:01 while a tiny drawn Sun and Moon appear on a clean white field by 0:01.75.
  • The strongest replay peak is 0:15.0–0:16.3, exactly as the scale diagram turns into a huge textured Sun with Earth reduced to a dot.
  • The explanation escalates from apparent size (0:01–0:11) to true scale (0:11–0:31), comparisons (0:31–1:03), and a geometry/tides payoff (1:03–1:39).

CaptionsNo running subtitles. Diagrams carry short labels, measurements, one equation, and arrows.
SoundContinuous tonal instrumental bed under speech; no clear sound effects on cuts; −12.7 LUFS measured integrated.
StructureFive explanatory beats through 1:39, then a 36 s sponsor/end card; core payoff at 1:32–1:39.
