A hand-drawn case for what drives people
A six-minute narrated whiteboard explainer turns two research tests into a drawn, counterintuitive lesson about motivation.
Field notes / why it works
The visible hand turns even a 35.8-second opening shot into a sequence of small reveals, while black-and-red diagrams keep dense narration legible. A familiar rule is challenged at 2:06, retested with larger stakes at 4:04, and replaced by a three-part framework at 5:11–5:17.5, the video's strongest replay point.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A quick, curious narrator questions a familiar rule about motivation, then walks through two experiments and a three-part alternative. One overhead whiteboard becomes a visual memory palace: a visible hand adds words, diagrams, characters, arrows, and comic details exactly as the argument advances.
Why it works
- The viewer watches the explanation being made. The first 2.75 seconds show a blank board turning into a letter; the intro resolves around 0:10, before speech begins at 0:13.8.
- A familiar reward/punishment rule is drawn at 0:45, then overturned with the first result at 2:06 and a larger-stakes replication at 4:04.
- The answer is delayed until 5:11, the strongest replay peak: the narrator names three factors while the hand writes them in red.

|---|---|
| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · 6:00 · source 520×294 at 25 fps |
| Pace | 26 detected shots; 4.2–4.3 cuts/min; 5.5 detected picture changes/min; mean shot 13.85 s, median 5.96 s. Continuous drawing creates more change than the cut count captures. |
| Script | 1,070 measured words; 185 wpm over runtime, 219 wpm while speaking; 77 sentences averaging 13.9 words; 9 questions; about 3.2 uses of “you” per 100 words. |
| Voice | One animated, medium-register lecturer; intellectually excited, conversational, fast. |
| On screen | Nearly 100% overhead whiteboard/live drawing; brief logo/title in the same space; no presenter face, product UI, or stock footage. |
| Captions | No conventional subtitles. Handwritten key claims and labels appear on the board in sync with speech. |
| Sound | Dry spoken audio; nearly silent pauses and no measured bed under speech; no clear cut effects. −25.2 LUFS integrated, −3.2 dBFS true peak. |
| Structure | Brand/drawing hook → familiar rule → experiment → reversal → skeptical objection → replication → practical interpretation → three-part model → example. No CTA in this six-minute segment. |
