Divergence and Curl Made Visible
A long-form math explainer builds intuition with continuously animated vector fields before introducing the formal ideas.
Field notes / why it works
The opening moving field names both ideas by 0:03, then the same visual language supports a 2:15 fluid analogy, a 4:20 real-world constraint, and a 4:32 pivot to rotation. Only 11 cuts occur in six measured minutes, while 140 internal graphic changes keep the model developing. The 4:23.8–4:33.2 obstacle-flow demonstration is the strongest replay peak in the measured portion.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A calm narrator teaches an abstract idea by turning it into a moving, visible system. The viewer first learns the visual vocabulary, then tests two related concepts against the same animated field; labels and equations arrive after the motion has made them intuitive.
Why it works
- A dense radial field is already moving in frame one, while the voice names the two ideas by 0:03; the picture creates a question before any formal definition.
- The visual metaphor stays consistent: arrows become particles, sources, sinks, and streamlines between 2:15 and 4:32, so each new statement modifies a model the viewer already understands.
- The most replayed measured span, 4:23.8–4:33.2, shows flow bending around an obstacle just before the pivot to curl; that animation supplies proof of the preceding constraint and a visual transition.

| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · full post 15:42; analyzed opening 6:00 at 640×360, 30 fps |
| Pace | 12 detected shots, 11 cuts, 1.8 cuts/min, mean shot 30 s; 140 internal graphic steps, about 25.2 picture changes/min including cuts |
| Script | 1,042 words in 6:00; 174 wpm overall, 216 wpm while speaking; 44 sentences averaging 23.7 words; 7 questions |
| Voice | One low-register, articulate, curious teacher; energetic pitch variation and deliberate pauses |
| On screen | Essentially 100% designed animation: vector fields, coordinate grids, moving streamlines, diagrams, sparse equations; no presenter |
| Captions | No verbatim subtitles; small serif concept headings and labels appear when needed |
| Sound | Speech forward; gaps nearly silent (−48.3 dBFS); music is credited for the full post but no continuous bed is established in this excerpt |
| Structure | Field primer → analogy → divergence → real-fluid test → curl → bridge to another application; no CTA in measured 6:00 |
