A Sonic Race of National GDP

Six national GDP histories animate as colored chart races with live year and value readouts over a continuous soundtrack.

Field notes / why it works

The first frame states the sensory premise and starts a cyan line moving immediately, so viewers understand the chart before the first 4-second reset. Five evenly spaced country switches create a repeatable comparison, while China's steep climb near 0:06.7–0:07.0 coincides with the strongest replay peak. Live years and exact dollar values make each trajectory legible without narration.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A fixed vertical chart turns six historical series into six consecutive four-second races. The opening label promises that the viewer will hear the comparison; each colored line draws from the first year to the latest year while a live year and value counter follow it. The next entity resets the same chart, inviting comparison and replay.

Why it works

  • The promise is visible in frame one: a white title pill, entity name, chart axis, and starting dot are already present at 0:00.
  • The line moves immediately and advances from 1980 to 2024 by about 0:03, creating progress without a cut or narration.
  • The strongest replay point, 0:06.7–0:07.0, coincides with China's steep late rise; the first reset at 0:04 teaches the repeatable viewing pattern.

PaceOne fixed composition; 0 camera cuts; five entity switches at 0:04, 0:08, 0:12, 0:16, 0:20; 12.7 measured picture changes/min. Continuous chart motion is the real pace.
ScriptNo intelligible spoken script. Short static labels, a live year, and a live value replace narration.
VoiceNone; speech detector produced six low-confidence ellipses, not usable words.
On screen100% animated infographic; no people, footage, or screen recording.
CaptionsNone. The large year and value are data readouts, not subtitles.
SoundContinuous, loud tonal/rhythmic bed (music-like classification); measured −6.4 LUFS integrated, −3.5 dBFS true peak. Exact instrumentation and note-to-data mapping are unverified.
StructureSix ~4 s races; each reaches its latest value before the next reset. No CTA. Final card ends on India.
