The Las Vegas That Isn't Las Vegas

A dry, map-led explainer turns a familiar city name into a jurisdiction and tax-history reveal.

Field notes / why it works

The spoken contradiction lands by 0:06 over familiar Vegas footage, then the sign relabel at 0:19–0:21 makes the claim visible; that moment is the strongest replay peak. Two long diagrams at 0:31–1:15 and 2:21–2:57 add graphic states as the narrator explains rules and the tax dispute, so 31 shots support a dense 658-word story without frantic cutting. The final 3:18–3:33 valley zoom resolves the opening name paradox.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A dry, quick narrator opens with a familiar destination, then says the name on the map means something else. Real footage supplies recognition; large coloured maps and flat cartoons turn the jurisdictional explanation into a small story with a dispute, a ruling, and a final wordplay payoff.

Why it works

  • The correction arrives by 0:06, while the famous landmark is still visually fresh; viewers immediately have a question to resolve.
  • The 0:19–0:21 road-sign rewrite from “LAS VEGAS” to “PARADISE” is the strongest replay peak. The claim becomes visible in one glance.
  • Two long, step-animated diagrams at 0:31–1:15 and 2:21–2:57 carry the dense rules and dispute. The shot count is only 31, but 20 graphic changes keep the explanation moving.
