The US as 100 People
A continuous pictogram explainer turns US population percentages into 100 rearranging figures and a sequence of visual comparisons.
Field notes / why it works
The opening resolves a dense field of figures into a 100 person premise by about 0:03, making later percentages instantly countable. The most replayed moment at 0:10–0:11.7 is the first clear 51/49 split; the same pictograms then reconfigure into age bins, pet ownership, income columns, and wealth stacks through 2:20, creating variety without asking viewers to learn a new visual language.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A population is reduced to 100 identical pictograms so each icon equals one percentage point. A continuous teal canvas reorganizes those icons into colored groups, labelled comparisons, and big numeric reveals across social, geographic, and economic dimensions. The repeated unit makes each new statistic immediately readable.
Why it works
- The first eight seconds zoom from a dense field of tiny figures to a plain 100 person premise; scale becomes tangible before the first statistic.
- At 0:09–0:12, the grid splits into two near equal blocks with large 51/49 figures. This most replayed passage is an early proof of the method.
- The same figures carry a sequence of distinct layouts: divided panels at 0:10, outlined age bins at 0:16, pet icons at 1:32, money stacks at 2:17. Novelty comes from rearrangement within a stable grammar.

| Pace | 4 detected macro shots, 3 definite cuts; 1.1–3.3 cuts/min allowing uncertain changes. 14 detected internal steps; about 6.1 picture changes/min. The 41.5 s mean shot duration describes long continuous animated scenes, not static holds. |
| Script | The supplied speech recognition returned 36 low confidence, largely nonsensical words and an implausible language ID. Treat the visible headlines and numbers as the reliable script; no defensible spoken WPM. |
| Voice | No intelligible speaking can be established from the provided evidence. Design for silent comprehension. |
| On screen | Essentially 100% motion graphics: a fixed pictogram vocabulary, labels, bars, outlined panels, a few accessory icons, and large numerals. |
| Captions | No conventional subtitles. All caps category headlines and huge numeric callouts are the primary narration. |
| Sound | Continuous tonal/music like bed; analysis suggests about 121 BPM. Measured whole file: −19.6 LUFS integrated, −6.7 dBFS true peak. |
| Structure | Scale premise → grouped demographics → identity/language/religion → place/household/technology → education/income/wealth → civic split → source card; no spoken CTA. |
