An Argument Drawn in Real Time
A six-minute illustrated explainer builds a philosophical argument across one evolving whiteboard, with a visible hand drawing each turn.
Field notes / why it works
A visible hand turns each clause into a new drawing, so three long shots of 57.55, 60.13 and 104.96 seconds stay active despite only 2.8–3.3 cuts per minute. The most replayed analysed stretch (0:26.3–0:32.9) is a tree-and-character reveal; later the abstract argument becomes a familiar coffee purchase at 2:18 and expands into a larger cause-and-effect map by 3:26. The transcript missed long audible passages, so its 74 overall wpm should be treated as a rough lower bound.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
An animated hand builds a dense, black-ink concept map on a white board as an expressive lecturer turns an abstract claim into everyday examples. The viewer stays to see the next part of the drawing and how its pieces connect. The actual thesis becomes explicit around 0:38–0:49; the first 28 seconds are branding, anticipation and a partially built map.
Why it works
- The hand starts drawing by 0:25, and the most replayed analysed passage is 0:26.3–0:32.9, when a labelled tree and cartoon figures take shape.
- Instead of resetting the screen each sentence, the map accumulates: a historical branch at 0:58–1:34 becomes a broader system at 1:55–2:02, then a concrete coffee purchase at 2:18–3:26.
- Mostly uninterrupted drawing offsets the slow edit: 18 detected shots in 6:00, only 2.8–3.3 cuts/min, yet the pen, camera reframing and new labels keep the frame changing.

| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · 640×360 source · 6:00 analysed |
| Pace | 18 shots, 17 detected cuts (2.8–3.3/min allowing uncertain changes), 11 measured internal steps, 4.7 measured picture changes/min; mean shot 20.0 s, median 4.68 s. Drawing motion happens inside the long shots. |
| Script | 409 machine-detected words; 74 wpm over the whole file, 147 wpm within detected speech. Unreliable as a full transcript: language was misdetected and long audible passages are missing. Build a fresh ~500–650-word script and time it to your recorded delivery. |
| Voice | One animated, medium-register adult lecturer; brisk clauses, varied pitch, argumentative but conversational. |
| On screen | About 90%+ whiteboard drawing and reframed portions of one growing illustrated map; short opening logo card and a few tight detail shots (inferred from sheets). |
| Captions | No conventional subtitles. Hand-lettered headlines, labels, speech bubbles and arrows appear near the objects they explain. |
| Sound | Voice-led mix; soft tonal bed is suggested by analysis, but music details are uncertain. No consistent cut SFX detected. Measured −22.4 LUFS integrated, −0.1 dBFS true peak. |
| Structure | Logo/visual wait → thesis → historical setup → systems diagram → familiar purchase example → wider implication → quoted/counterexample turn. No CTA or true ending in the analysed 6:00. |
