The Atomic Megaproject That Tried to Build With Bombs
A richly animated historical explainer turns an absurd engineering proposal into maps, scale comparisons, and a stepwise underground diagram.
Field notes / why it works
The surprising premise lands in the first sentence while a calm canyon acquires a distant blast by 0:02.35, before the first cut at 0:05.57. Maps at 3:03 and 3:13, a cost comparison at 3:27, and a cross-section at 4:23–4:44 make scale and mechanism visible; the sampled replay peaks near the atomic diagram (1:03–1:11) and bomb comparison (1:27–1:34). A test is teased at 4:44 and the chapter resumes after the sponsor at 5:56, preserving an open question.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A narrator opens with a startling real proposal over an idyllic cartoon landscape, then reveals the collision between grand technical ambition and its human cost. Continuous, densely researched voiceover drives custom flat vector animation: nearly every noun becomes a character, map, scale comparison, or cutaway diagram. The sampled portion builds to a promised real world test, pauses for a sponsor, and returns on a chapter cliffhanger.
Why it works
- The opening gives the surprising premise in the first sentence while the calm canyon view acquires a small explosion by 1:25; the first cut waits until 0:05.6.
- The abstract scale becomes visible: bomb comparison at 1:30, canal maps at 3:03 and 3:13, a price comparison at 3:27, and an underground mechanism at 4:34.
- A clear open loop survives the sponsor: the plan is ready to be tested at 4:44, the ad runs 4:49–5:53, and the story resumes with a “fiasco” chapter card at 5:56. The final outcome is outside this sample.

| Voice | One low register, animated, dryly amused documentary narrator |
| On screen | Approximately 85% designed cartoon scenes, maps, character animation and diagrams; 15% sponsor UI/page composites (inferred from sheets). No live presenter. |
| Captions | No continuous subtitles. Brief chapter titles, small map/diagram labels, numeric callouts, and sponsor UI text. |
| Sound | Continuous tonal bed measured about 8.8 dB under voice; restrained cut accents; −14.5 LUFS integrated, −2.5 dBFS true peak |
| Structure | Shock premise → title → inventor/history → scale → proposal → canal/harbor cases → engineering diagram → sponsor → chapter cliffhanger, all within sampled 6:00 |
