Sixteen Years of Social Networks in One Bar-Chart Race

A 150-second animated ranking turns social-network user counts into a continuous race with early reversals and a late TikTok surge.

Field notes / why it works

The chart starts mid-race: Myspace overtakes the opening leader within about two seconds, teaching viewers to track the rankings without a spoken setup. One continuous scene uses changing bars, counters, logos and an oversized quarter marker to make 16 years legible in about 130 seconds. The strongest replay at 2:07.5–2:09.0 lands near the late TikTok climb, and comments show that surprising ranks sparked debate.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A horizontal bar-chart race compresses roughly 16 years of social-network growth into 130 seconds. The viewer immediately sees three ranked competitors and a date; changing rank, bar length, logos and numbers create the narrative without spoken explanation. A brief branded end card follows the final 2019 Q3 frame.

Why it works

  • At 0:00, the bars, logos and “2003 Q4” date make the historical contest readable before any introduction. Myspace passes Friendster within roughly 1–2 seconds.
  • The same chart stays on screen for 149.7 seconds with zero cuts; movement comes from continuously changing values, rank swaps, entries and exits. The format asks viewers to keep checking who leads.
  • The most-replayed span, 2:07.5–2:09.0, sits at the late-2019 ranking where TikTok is climbing near older networks. Comments debate surprising ranks and category choices, so sourcing and definitions matter.
