The Freezing Water Paradox
A fast hand-drawn physics explainer turns two familiar water behaviors into a paradox, then resolves it with a phase diagram and a second ice form.
Field notes / why it works
The first 33 seconds stack a familiar fact, its apparent opposite, and a constrained what-if; 13 cuts in the first 10 seconds draw each step as it is spoken. Reversing state boxes at 0:36–0:44 make the paradox visible, and the top replayed span (0:36.9–0:38.8) sits there. A phase diagram answers the first question at 0:53–1:16, while a different ice phase at 2:07–2:22 supplies a second payoff.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A quick, conversational narrator poses a seeming contradiction using two everyday rules, then draws the experiment that makes the rules collide. A top-down whiteboard builds diagrams in sync with each clause; a quantitative graph resolves the paradox and a late second reveal expands the answer.
Why it works
- The opening supplies a known rule by 0:03, the opposing rule by 0:10, and the actual question by 0:24–0:32. The viewer has enough information to try solving it before the narrator does.
- Drawings change with almost every clause: 122 measured cuts, 16 internal graphic changes, and 42.9 picture changes/min. The exact instant of each mark supplies visual proof, rather than decorative footage.
- The apparent freeze/melt loop at 0:36–0:44 becomes a phase-diagram answer at 0:53–1:16, then a more surprising second phase at 2:07–2:22. The top replay span, 0:36.9–0:38.8, is inside that loop.
