How a Tree Works From the Inside
A richly animated science explainer turns a counterintuitive tree claim into an origin story, an anatomical cutaway, and a quantified water-pump comparison.
Field notes / why it works
A seven-word paradox begins at 0:01.6 and the first cut at 0:04.4 immediately starts the anatomical answer. The six-minute measured segment keeps widening the question, from ancient competition at 0:36 to an internal cutaway at 3:15; its largest replay peak at 5:22.9–5:29.8 aligns with a concrete 10 m pump comparison. Fifty shots and 61 internal graphic steps allow sustained explanations without a static frame.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
An illustrated science story starts with a calm, impossible-sounding claim, then zooms from a familiar object to its hidden mechanism. It retells the object's origin as a struggle, names the breakthrough, and pays off the opening paradox with a large scale comparison.
Why it works
- The opening frame moves through forest foliage before the first words at 0:01.6; the contradiction lands at 0:04.4, exactly with the first cut into an anatomical explanation.
- The middle turns a complex mechanism into an adventure: ocean life at 0:39, competition for height at 1:18, a material breakthrough at 1:42, then a new transport problem at 2:44.
- The strongest measured replay peak, 5:22.9–5:29.8, is an unusually concrete comparison: a 10 m human pump diagram against a tree's much taller water column.

| Measured segment | |
|---|---|
| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · 6:00 analysed of an 11:27 upload; measured file 640×360 at 30 fps |
| Pace | 50 shots, 49 definite cuts: 8.2/min; 8.2–14.7/min including uncertain changes. 61 internal graphic steps; 18.3 definite picture changes/min. Mean shot 7.2 s, median 5.48 s. |
| Script | 992 detected words; 167 wpm over the segment, about 197 wpm while speaking. 58 sentences, mean 17.1 words; four questions. |
| Voice | One low-register, animated, articulate narrator. No visible speaker. |
| On screen | Almost entirely custom 2D illustration and diagram animation: broad landscapes, tiny life forms, stylised tree anatomy, maps, cross-sections and scale diagrams. |
| Captions | No running subtitles in sampled frames. Occasional uppercase chapter cards and small anchored scientific labels. |
| Sound | Continuous tonal bed, measured about 12.2 dB beneath speech; accents likely accompany many cuts (inferred). Integrated −15.8 LUFS; true peak −2.5 dBFS. |
| Structure | Contrarian hook → stakes → origin story → invention → new problem → internal mechanism → dramatic scale comparison → return to core anatomy. The upload's eventual ending and CTA are outside this analysis. |
