WeatherNext 2: Forecasting From Everyday Stakes to Proof
A documentary product launch that connects daily weather decisions to a model reveal, scientific explanation, forecast visuals and a measured performance claim.
Field notes / why it works
The first 15 seconds make weather consequential through ships, aircraft, crops, rain and a person, with six cuts in the first 10 seconds before the 0:16 model reveal. Equations at 0:39, map graphics at 0:53 and a lead-time interface at 1:17 make technical claims visible. The strongest replay peak, 1:47.6–1:49.0, lands on the comparative accuracy claim and researcher/code imagery.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A polished, interview-led announcement starts with ordinary weather decisions, widens to infrastructure, introduces the model at 0:16, explains the old bottleneck, then proves speed and usefulness. Its engine is a recurring three-way handoff: human consequence → calm scientist explanation → a visual demonstration of the claim.
Why it works
- The first 15 seconds turn an abstract forecast model into transport, power, food and a commute; six cuts occur in the first 10 seconds.
- The explanation becomes visible: equations at 0:39, forecast maps at 0:53, a lead-time interface at 1:17 and diverging scenario paths at 1:28.
- The strongest replay signal is 1:47.6–1:49.0, during the comparative accuracy claim and a look at the model/workstation, rather than the final logo.
Plate 02 / Format card
| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · 2:18 (source 640×360, 23.98 fps) |
| Pace | 54 shots; 53 definite cuts, 23.0–24.3 cuts/min including uncertain changes; 30 picture changes/min; mean 2.56 s, median 1.88 s |
| Script | 352 spoken words; 154 wpm over runtime, 189 wpm while speaking; 22 sentences averaging 16 words; no questions |
| Voice | Several calm, technically credible adult interview voices; measured pitch is aggregate, not one voice |
| On screen | Roughly 40% interview, 35% data/product/science imagery, 25% weather and human-stakes footage (estimated from sheets) |
| Captions | No continuous subtitles; one large product title and restrained embedded labels/interfaces |
| Sound | Low tonal bed (music-like, inferred), around 10 dB below speech; no clear cut SFX; −16.0 LUFS, −0.9 dBFS true peak |
| Structure | Stakes 0:00 → reveal 0:16 → old method 0:33 → new method 0:59 → speed/scenarios 1:13 → benchmark 1:43 → availability/human payoff 1:50–2:15 |
