Lost: a companion's animated journey
A dialogue-light AI animated short uses a child-and-dog bond, repeated props, and a late emotional reversal to sustain a 4:42 story.
Field notes / why it works
Four cuts and pale flashes in the first 3 seconds make a tiny first step visually active, while play, snow, a ball, and a bedside cuddle establish the bond by 0:46. The later phone, lonely dog, lost poster, embrace, and empty bowl tell the changing relationship through images; the quiet 2:49–2:53 bedside reaction is the strongest replay peak (0.81).
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A warm, dialogue-light animated short makes us care about a small companion through everyday play, then moves that bond through neglect, separation, searching, and an emotionally ambiguous return. The promise is pictorial: the opening baby and dog establish a relationship worth following before any readable title or exposition.
Why it works
- The first 3 seconds contain four cuts and bright near-white flashes, turning an ordinary first step into a visual hook; the dog joins the child's story by 0:05–0:12.
- Small repeated objects carry time and emotion: the dog, ball, leash, bed, and finally an empty green bowl at 3:57. Viewers can infer the changes without narration.
- It saves its strongest emotional pause for 2:49–2:53, the largest replay peak (0.81), where a young man wakes beside the dog. A later replay peak at 4:23–4:26 (0.68) lands on the doorway/return beat.

|---|---|
| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · 4:42 · measured copy 640×360 at 24 fps |
| Pace | 83 shots, 82 measured cuts, 17.4–18.7 cuts/min allowing uncertain changes; 29.8 total picture changes/min; mean shot 3.4 s, median 3.08 s |
| Script | Extremely sparse character dialogue. The automated transcript's 46 words include clear music misrecognition, so do not use its 12 overall wpm or 81% speech-coverage figure as a script target. |
| Voice | Occasional natural character speech; no continuous presenter or narrator. |
| On screen | Nearly all stylized, cinematic character animation. Establishing views, medium two-shots, expressive face and prop close-ups. |
| Captions | No speech captions. A single large title in the cover and a small final credit are the visible typography. |
| Sound | Continuous tonal/music-like bed measured between speech; exact instruments and genre cannot be confirmed from stills. No regular cut-hit pattern measured. |
| Structure | Bond → time passing → disregard → separation/search → reunion → final unresolved absence. No spoken CTA. |
