Why Modern Wind Turbines Are Big and Thin
A fast hand-drawn physics explainer turns turbine shape into a chain of visual constraints and analogies.
Field notes / why it works
The 0:01 old-to-new question becomes a huge scale comparison at 0:04, and by 0:24 the narrator promises three concrete features. A drawn 59% limit at 1:00–1:06 is the strongest replay peak; a rapidly updated ball-and-wedge analogy at 2:12–2:33 makes the harder speed argument visible before the 2:48 summary.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A quick, curious narrator asks why a familiar engineered object changed shape, then draws the answer in black marker on a nearly white page. Each visible feature becomes a physics or design constraint; the explanation ends by recombining those constraints into one memorable design rule.
Why it works
- The opening question at 0:01 names a visible old-to-new mystery; the 0:04 drawing places the two scales side by side.
- The 0:22 list gives three promises: size, blade count, and blade shape. The viewer can track progress through the explanation without chapter cards.
- The 59% limit lands with a diagram and handwritten number at 1:00–1:06, the highest replay segment (1:04.2–1:06.2). A bouncing-ball analogy at 2:12–2:33 makes the harder speed argument visible.

| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · 3:26.1 · measured source 640×360 at 23.98 fps |
| Pace | One continuous white canvas, zero detected hard cuts; 25 measured internal visual changes, about 7.3 changes/min. A detected “shot” is the entire 206.1 s, so use drawing-state timing rather than conventional shot length. |
| Script | 721 spoken words · 214 wpm overall, about 241 wpm while speaking · 36 sentences, 20 words on average · two questions |
| Voice | Low-register, animated, conversational educator; quick but clear, with small pauses at new sections and important numbers |
| On screen | Almost entirely hand-drawn black-line diagrams on white; one brief photograph/book collage near 3:08 for the sponsor message |
| Captions | No speech subtitles. Handwritten equations, short labels, occasional speech bubbles and arrows are part of the diagram. |
| Sound | Continuous quiet tonal/music-like bed; a highly liked comment refers to a recurring bass riff. No clearly evidenced cut effects. Master measured −13.5 LUFS integrated. |
| Structure | Old-versus-new question → three-feature promise → size → flow constraint → speed trade-off → physical analogy → summary → sponsor CTA |
