A Century of Warming Drawn as a Spiral
A silent radial data animation stacks 143 years of monthly temperature traces before turning the finished spiral into a 3D form.
Field notes / why it works
At 0:00 the empty month-and-temperature grid establishes a rule, and the first line arrives by 0:00.65 as the centre year advances. One uncut 30-second view lets pale traces accumulate into warm outer rings around 0:18–0:22; the oblique stack at 0:26.3 rewards viewers with a new reading of the same data.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A fixed radial chart starts almost empty and draws one ring-like data path per time period. A large year counter gives progress while successive curves change from cool pale tones to warm reds. In the final seconds, the camera changes from overhead to an oblique view, turning the history into a physical-looking stack.
Why it works
- The viewing rule is learned immediately: the counter advances from 1880 at 0:00 to 1886 at 0:01 while curves accumulate against fixed month and temperature guides.
- The chart is the story. There are 0 cuts and no narration, so the changing radius and colour remain easy to compare across 30 seconds.
- The warm outer curves become prominent around 0:18–0:22; the 3D stack at 0:26.3 supplies a second visual payoff without changing the underlying data.

| Pace | 1 continuous shot · 0 cuts/min · 6 detected graphic steps, about 12 picture changes/min · 30.03 s shot |
| Script | No spoken script; the data, year counter, scale and colour carry the explanation |
| Voice | None; no person appears |
| On screen | 100% full-frame motion graphic / data visualization |
| Captions | None; persistent chart labels and one large changing year, not subtitles |
| Sound | Effectively silent: measured −70 LUFS integrated; no audible bed established |
| Structure | Empty chart → accelerated chronological accumulation → warm-colour escalation → oblique stack reveal; no CTA |
