How a Photicular Page Makes Still Images Move
A brisk 3D mechanism explainer turns successive photos into strips, adds a lens layer, then reveals motion on a book page.
Field notes / why it works
The first 0.5 seconds pair a camera, moving subject, and flash, making the setup legible before any title. The sequence moves from whole photos to fine strips around 0:10, a lens macro around 0:23, a clear picture at 0:27, and a moving page by 0:39, so each visual answers the next causal question. Six detected shots sustain 40.8 seconds through transformations inside the frame.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A continuous animated explainer begins with an everyday moving subject and reconstructs the hidden physical mechanism behind an apparently animated printed page. Each line of narration names an action that the camera immediately shows: capture frames, slice them, interleave them, add lenses, shift the page, and see motion.
Why it works
- The opening gives a concrete action at 0:00 while a camera and its subject already occupy the frame; there is no title delay.
- The visual scale changes from a whole photograph at 0:03 to hairline strips at 0:10, then a macro lens surface at 0:23–0:26. Each enlargement answers the previous question.
- The result arrives at 0:26–0:28 as the fragmented image resolves, and the final page movement at 0:35–0:40 explains the motion viewers came to understand.

| Pace | 6 detected shots, 5 definite cuts, 7.4–19.1 possible cuts/min including uncertain transitions; mean shot 6.8 s; 10.3 detected picture changes/min. Most motion happens within shots. |
| Script | 115 spoken words; 172 wpm overall, about 196 wpm while speaking; seven transcript phrases across five measured sentence endings. |
| Voice | One medium-register, quick, animated, conversational narrator. No on-camera speaker. |
| On screen | Approximately all rendered demonstration: virtual camera, photos, dissected strips, macro lens sheet, final book/page. No talking head or UI. |
| Captions | Small white bold sans serif, dark outline/shadow, 2–4 words at a time near the lower center. |
| Sound | Continuous tonal music-like bed under the speech; no clearly measured cut impacts. Integrated loudness −11.2 LUFS, measured true peak +0.1 dBFS. |
| Structure | Six demonstration beats; first clear reconstructed image around 0:27; final motion mechanism from 0:29; no CTA. |
