No Excuses: From Empty Courts to Action
A cinematic sports spec film stacks voiced excuses over empty facilities, then turns to a long silent decision and a minimal brand challenge.
Field notes / why it works
The voice begins only at 0:02.3, after the empty sunrise establishes a visual question. Twenty cuts through 0:26.5, including a rapid 0:20–0:26 burst, make the subsequent 25.32-second dark-room decision feel consequential. The final wide shot begins at 0:51.8, its challenge line is visible by 0:55.3, and a 1.18-second mark card ends the film; replay peaks near both the 0:27 turn and 0:55 payoff.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A one-minute cinematic brand film begins with a sunrise, then runs through empty sports facilities while an offscreen voice piles up reasons to skip training. At 0:26.5 the montage drops into a dark bedroom; a lone person gets up, and the 0:51.8–0:59.9 resolve turns the excuses into a terse brand challenge. The promise is emotional rather than instructional: action can outlast the inner monologue.
Why it works
- The first spoken excuse arrives at 0:02.3 after 2.3 seconds of near-empty dawn image, giving the viewer an unanswered question: who is missing from these places?
- Twenty cuts occur by 0:26.5, with a 0:20–0:26 burst of ten cuts. The sudden 25.32-second bedroom shot changes the pace exactly when the excuses end.
- The closing promenade begins at 0:51.8, with its challenge line visible by 0:55.3; the logo follows on black at 0:58.7. This pays off the visual absence without a spoken sales pitch. A replay peak also lands at the 0:27 transition.
Plate 02 / Format card
| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · 59.9 s · source measured at 640×360, 25 fps |
| Pace | 23 measured shots, 22 cuts, 22.1 cuts/min; 34.1 picture changes/min including internal changes; 2.6 s mean shot, 1.08 s median; one 25.32 s hold |
| Script | 97 machine-detected Portuguese words, about 238 wpm over the spoken segment (284 wpm during active speech); 13 short, uneven sentences; transcript has 44 low-confidence words, so use the visible subtitles for meaning |
| Voice | Offscreen, conversational adult voice performing a run of familiar excuses; increasingly compressed and insistent, then absent for the last ~34 s |
| On screen | Roughly 44% empty sports/location montage (0:00–0:26.5), 42% dark bedroom action (0:26.5–0:51.8), 11% closing promenade/title, 2% logo end card |
| Captions | Tiny white, sentence-level English subtitles centered at the bottom during the excuse montage; no karaoke or highlighted words |
| Sound | Tonal, music-like bed detected; quiet opening, crowded voice-led middle, spacious nonverbal finish. No clear cut-synced sound effects. −18.2 LUFS integrated, −2.5 dBFS true peak in the source |
| Structure | Dawn question → excuse inventory → rapid refusal montage → quiet physical decision → challenge line → logo; no explicit CTA or loop |
