The Free Trial Van
A comic free-plan bait-and-switch turns into a crisp website-builder proof reel and a clear pay-on-publish offer.
Field notes / why it works
A moving van makes the false promise readable within the 2.4-second opening shot, while three quick comic catches lead into the product reveal by 0:09.3. Eleven of 15 cuts fall before 0:15, then authentic editor and output images carry the claims through the slower 0:17.5–0:27.3 section. The payment rule lands around 0:21.7, followed by a 0:27.3 van callback and a clean 0:30.5 logo card.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A polished, deadpan comedy ad literalizes the tricks behind a supposedly free offer, then replaces the joke with a real product demonstration. A dirty white van with “FREE TRIAL” painted on its side enters a dark studio at 0:00; by 0:09 the ad has pivoted to design output, interface proof and a clear payment boundary. The final 0:27–0:33 return to the van pays off the opening visually.
Why it works
- The moving van fills the first 2.4 s while dialogue sets up the familiar “free plan” claim; the prop itself makes the abstract complaint legible before the product appears.
- Three escalating false-offer vignettes occupy 0:02.4–0:08.1, then the first true benefit arrives at 0:09.3. Eleven of 15 cuts fall before 0:15, keeping the setup and reveal brisk.
- The 0:11–0:27 proof run shows design examples, editor UI, an AI prompt and the pay-on-publish boundary. The 0:27.3 van callback and 0:30.5 logo card make a clear finish; the replay peak at 0:30.9–0:31.3 coincides with the logo, though replay data alone does not explain why viewers revisit it.

| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · 33.0 s · source measured at 640×360, 24 fps |
| Pace | 16 shots, 15 cuts = 27.3 cuts/min; 4 internal steps = 34.5 picture changes/min; mean shot 2.06 s, median 1.44 s. The 0:17.5–0:27.3 graphic sequence is the 9.83 s outlier. |
| Script | 66 spoken words · 136 wpm across runtime, about 196 wpm during speech · 12 short sentences, 5.5 words average · no questions |
| Voice | Low-register, animated, dry comic delivery; speech starts at 0:00. Character lines and narration may use different performers (inferred from the visual vignettes; the measurements do not identify speakers). |
| On screen | Roughly 9 s staged live action, 18 s product/UI and typography, 6 s closing gag/logo (estimated from sheets). |
| Captions | No running subtitles. Use occasional centered white keyword cards; product UI and scene props carry the copy. |
| Sound | Continuous tonal/music-like bed, about −21.6 dBFS between words; speech-forward mix, few cut accents; −14.7 LUFS integrated. |
| Structure | Misleading-offer comedy → real product reveal → examples and UI proof → payment rule and CTA → van callback → logo. |
