Brexit's Three-Way Constraint, Drawn on a Map
A brisk hand-drawn explainer turns a complex border dispute into a three-corner choice, then lands a long visual gag.
Field notes / why it works
A familiar question is spoken by 0:02.5, then the viewpoint literally rises above the dispute by 0:11. Repeated maps test each boundary placement before the gold triangle states the three-way constraint at 2:41; 66 changes within 28 shots keep a modest 7.1 cuts/min visually active. The small character payoff at 3:35–3:38 coincides with the highest replay peak.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A fast, dryly funny animated explainer answers a plain-language question about a confusing public issue. A guide character rises above the argument, draws a map, tests three desired conditions, and reveals why every apparent compromise breaks one condition.
Why it works
- The question arrives by 0:02.5, then the balloon literally changes the point of view at 0:08–0:12. The promised “big picture” becomes a visual action.
- The three-part model is seeded at 0:12, tested through two different wall placements at 0:38–1:28 and 1:41–2:30, then named as an impossible choice at 2:41. Each diagram earns the final triangle.
- The ending compresses the argument to a three-corner diagram at 3:20, then lets the visual joke play out at 3:35–3:38. That sequence is the highest measured replay peak.
Plate 02 / Format card
| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · 640×360 source · 3:46.7 · 30 fps |
| Pace | 28 shots, 27 cuts = 7.1 cuts/min; 66 internal changes; 24.6 total picture changes/min; mean shot 8.1 s, median 5.23 s |
| Script | 686 measured words; 196 wpm overall, about 230 wpm during speech; 48 sentences averaging 14.3 words; six questions |
| Voice | Single low-register, brisk, wry narrator; conversational asides and animated emphasis |
| On screen | Essentially 100% hand-drawn 2D animation: wide maps and diagrams, simple stick characters, balloon guide, brief title and metaphor inserts; no live presenter |
| Captions | No running subtitles. Information appears as map labels, a brief headline, speech bubbles, and large words inside a triangle. |
| Sound | Quiet continuous tonal bed (music-like, inferred); no reliable evidence of cut-synced effects; integrated −19.4 LUFS, true peak −2.9 dBFS |
| Structure | Question → high-level map → first option and its cost → second option and its cost → three-way constraint → temporary workaround → compact payoff and visual coda; no CTA |
