The determinant as animated area
A long-form math explainer that earns an abstract definition through continuously transformed grids, then tests its edge cases.
Field notes / why it works
The video shows a unit shape changing before naming the determinant at 2:28–2:37; the analyzed excerpt's strongest replay peak, 2:30.8–2:36.8, sits on that reveal. It reuses the same grid and colored axes across scaling, shearing, collapse and reversal, then renews attention with an exception at 3:42 and a continuous proof around 5:06–5:30.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A calm narrator teaches an abstract idea by animating one simple object through several cases, then revealing the name of the rule it demonstrates. A friendly character gag opens the lesson; nearly all subsequent screen time is a dark coordinate world where each spoken relationship becomes a visible change.
Why it works
- The definition arrives only at 2:28–2:37, after the viewer has seen the unit square scale and shear. The replay peak at 2:30.8–2:36.8 lands on that visual definition.
- One diagram handles successive tests: a square becomes a rectangle at 1:04, a parallelogram at 1:26, and a flattened region at 3:07. The visual vocabulary stays stable as the claim grows.
- At 3:42 the narrator admits an exception, then the animation shows a flipped orientation at 4:00–4:35. That turn starts a second question after the first has been answered.

| Pace | 12 measured shots; 11 certain cuts, or 1.8 cuts/min; 1.8–3.2 cuts/min including uncertain changes; 46 internal steps; about 9.5 picture changes/min; mean shot 30.0 s, median 17.25 s |
| Script | 1,063 transcribed words in 6:00; 183 wpm overall, 221 wpm while speaking; 52 sentences averaging 20.4 words; five questions; 55 number mentions |
| Voice | Warm, curious, medium register narrator; steady explanation with animated emphasis and mostly falling endings |
| On screen | Essentially 100% motion graphics: a brief character/logo opening, then 2D grids, vectors, shapes and matrices, with a 3D preview near 5:39 |
| Captions | No conventional subtitles in the sampled frames; equations, labels and occasional speech bubbles carry only the key idea |
| Sound | Brief low level opening sound/music; near silent pauses under narration after 0:12; no clear cut accents; −20.8 LUFS integrated, −3.2 dBFS true peak |
| Structure | Warm ident → familiar setup → worked examples → visual definition → edge cases → exception → orientation proof → bridge into 3D; no CTA in analyzed excerpt |
