Field notes / why it works

The shoe sole fills the first 2.84 seconds, and the strongest replay peak at 0:01.9–0:02.2 lands inside that unusual close-up. At 0:05.3 the runner leaves the café; 21 shots then carry the same action through contrasting streets, trails, tracks, and snow before the cast expands to groups after 0:20.6. The 1.43-second average shot keeps the montage moving without relying on on-screen text.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A shoe-level view of a runner's quiet preparation opens the film. One runner leaves a café and starts moving; rapid cuts then pass the same action among people running through different cities, landscapes, weather, and groups. The implied promise (inferred) is that running can belong to many kinds of people and places, conveyed by images rather than an on-screen claim.

Why it works

  • The first shot holds for 2.84 s on a large shoe sole close to the lens, then reveals the runner from overhead at 0:02.8. The most-replayed interval, 0:01.9–0:02.2, falls inside that unusual perspective.
  • Around 0:05 the film switches from preparation to movement; seven cuts arrive within the first ten seconds, making the departure feel immediate.
  • From 0:07 to 0:26, the sequence repeatedly changes terrain, weather, and runner count while preserving one readable action: running. Twenty-one shots average 1.43 s.
