A Drawn Admissions Paradox
A brisk marker-drawn explainer turns a toy admissions puzzle into a sourced question about where inequity begins.
Field notes / why it works
The hand builds a countable puzzle before asking the fairness question: 43% versus 38% appears by 0:27, and equal within-department rates resolve it by 0:46. At 1:03 the lesson shifts to a documented case, then reopens the causal question at 1:45. The strongest replay peak at 2:47–2:49 lands on a later data chart, suggesting viewers revisit the evidence.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A quick, dry narrator guides a hand-drawn whiteboard lesson. A whimsical admissions example makes a statistical contradiction legible, then a documented university case shows why the contradiction matters. The apparent answer at 0:32 becomes a new question at 1:45: a fair local decision can coexist with unequal conditions upstream.
Why it works
- The opening starts with a blank board, a marker and a playful hypothetical; 13 detected cuts in the first 10 seconds make the drawing feel live while the setup stays simple.
- Two aggregate rates, 43% and 38% at 0:19–0:27, create a concrete mystery; equal rates within each department at 0:33–0:46 resolve it visually.
- The video refuses to stop at the arithmetic. It moves to 44% versus 35% in a real admissions case at 1:12, then to the larger causal question at 1:45. The biggest replay peak, 2:47–2:49, sits on the later evidence chart.

| Pace | 109 detected shots, 108 detected cuts = 30.0/min; 14 additional in-shot steps = 33.9 picture changes/min. Mean 1.98 s, median 0.79 s; many short detections track a drawing hand, with longer diagram holds up to 22.27 s before the final 33.45 s sponsor segment. |
| Script | 691 spoken words; 195 wpm across the run, 213 wpm while speaking. 27 sentences, two questions, 25 number mentions. |
| Voice | Low-register, animated, brisk explanatory narrator; lightly amused for the toy example, firm for the real-world turn. |
| On screen | Predominantly locked top-down live marker drawing on white paper; occasional scanned paper excerpt and simple charts; a brief software view in the sponsor section. No presenter face. |
| Captions | No running subtitles. Handwritten labels and rates appear where the narration needs them. |
| Sound | Quiet continuous tonal bed inferred from measurement, roughly 13.5 dB under speech; no clear cut-synced effects. −13.5 LUFS integrated, measured true peak +0.2 dBFS. |
| Structure | Toy example → aggregate discrepancy → grouped-rate resolution → real case → deeper causal question → source evidence and conclusion → sponsor from 3:09. |
