Dragon V2 Orbital Flight Film
A wordless CGI launch film that follows a spacecraft through docking, reentry, and landing before revealing its name.
Field notes / why it works
A nearly black, uninterrupted 0:00–0:16 approach makes the object and Earth's scale the hook, while a station reveal at 0:16 turns that curiosity into a destination. The 0:31–0:33 cockpit/docking transition is the strongest replay peak, and the film keeps escalating from separation at 1:08 to orange reentry at 1:24 and landing by 2:04. The product name waits until 2:07, after the visual proof.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A near-wordless 3D concept film follows one craft from orbital approach through station rendezvous, return, atmospheric entry, and a controlled landing. It promises a complete mission by showing the destination early (0:16), then pays off the return sequence at 1:24–2:04. The product name appears only after the journey, at 2:07–2:10.
Why it works
- The first 16 seconds let the object grow out of a nearly black frame above Earth's limb; this gives the silhouette and destination room to register before the first cut.
- The 0:32 cockpit insert briefly adds a human scale between exterior docking views; the 0:31.4–0:32.8 region is the strongest replay peak measured.
- The trajectory keeps changing: approach (0:00–0:20), docking (0:32–0:48), release (1:08–1:24), reentry (1:24–1:32), descent and landing (1:32–2:04). The last title names the completed journey.
Plate 02 / Format card
| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · 640×360 source · 30 fps · 130.5 s |
| Pace | 11 measured shots; 10 cuts = 4.6 cuts/min, or 6.0 if three uncertain changes were cuts; 39 internal picture changes; 22.5 total picture changes/min; mean shot 11.86 s, median 8.07 s |
| Script | No reliable spoken script. The three machine-transcribed tokens are likely audio errors; use visual beats instead of a word budget. |
| Voice | None supported by the frames or transcript. No person needs to speak. |
| On screen | About 10/11 shots are exterior CGI spacecraft/space/landing views; one brief cockpit insert at ~0:31. No presenter, UI walkthrough, or subtitles. |
| Captions | None. A final uppercase product-name card at ~2:07 is the only designed headline. |
| Sound | Continuous tonal/music-like bed, rough 80 BPM; measured −9.2 LUFS integrated and +1.4 dBFS true peak. No clear effects consistently aligned to cuts. |
| Structure | 6 mission beats: reveal, approach, docking, depart, reentry, landing/name reveal. No spoken CTA. |
