Anesthesia explained through an illustrated patient
A five-minute narrated 2D lesson moves from a familiar surgery countdown into animated neural mechanisms and back to the patient.
Field notes / why it works
The 0:05.8 countdown memory makes the topic personal, then 0:18–0:25 reveals that apparent sleep hides several separate effects. A recurring patient links wide scenes to a cell-membrane animation; the most-replayed stretch at 1:14–1:17 falls on that visual mechanism. The 3:13–3:24 gate-and-particle sequence demonstrates cause and effect before the 4:11–4:38 return to practical outcomes.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A calm narrator begins with an experience the viewer may recognize, then reveals that the simple explanation hides several processes. A recurring cartoon surrogate travels from everyday consequence to history, system-wide view, and a microscopic mechanism, before the story widens again to practical stakes.
Why it works
- The title asks the question, while the first narrated scene at 0:05.8 makes it personal through the familiar countdown before surgery.
- The orange patient mascot anchors the abstract material at 0:22, 0:33, 2:44, and 4:32; diagrams can change scale without losing the human consequence.
- The most-replayed span, 1:14–1:17, sits on a membrane/channel explanation. The viewer can inspect the exact mechanism rather than only hear its name.

| Pace | 11 detected shot groups; 10 certain cuts = 2.0 cuts/min, up to 4.9 with uncertain changes; 27 internal graphic steps; about 7.5 measured picture changes/min. Mean detected group 26.9 s, median 10.76 s. These groups contain ongoing animation. |

| Voice | One low-register, curious, assured adult narrator; conversational pace with animated pitch movement |
| On screen | Nearly all bespoke 2D illustration and motion graphics: mascot scenes, history vignettes, anatomical and microscopic diagrams; no live presenter |
| Captions | No running subtitles. Labels appear only when an object or concept needs naming. |
| Sound | Narration over a quiet tonal bed, measured about 19.4 dB beneath voice; no clear effect on every cut; −17.9 LUFS integrated, −1.8 dBFS true peak |
