The Derivative Paradox, Drawn Step by Step
A six-minute excerpt of a calculus explainer that turns a conceptual contradiction into a moving car, graph, and visible difference quotient.
Field notes / why it works
The 0:15–1:08 opening names a familiar definition and exposes its contradiction, giving the lesson a clear question to answer. One car journey introduced at 1:08 anchors the changing graphs; the excerpt's strongest replay peak at 3:42–3:52 coincides with two car positions, 30 and 50 meters, becoming a visible rate calculation. Thirty-seven marked graphic steps keep the reasoning moving within two long continuous scenes.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A calm, precise narrator takes a familiar statement, shows why it seems self-contradictory, and resolves it through a concrete car journey and an animated graph. The teaching engine is a single black canvas whose objects, labels, and quantities change in sync with each step of the reasoning.
Why it works
- The title and 0:15–1:08 opening establish a clear promise, then turn the ordinary phrase “instantaneous rate of change” into a contradiction before offering a way through it.
- The 1:08 car journey gives viewers one stable physical model; from 1:46 to 2:41, a distance curve and velocity curve make changing speed visible rather than merely verbal.
- The strongest replay peak in this excerpt, 3:42–3:52, lands exactly on the two car positions, 30 and 50 meters, and the change-in-distance/change-in-time fraction: the abstract rule has visible numbers.

| Pace | Detector: 2 long continuous scenes, 1 cut, 0.2–0.5 cuts/min allowing uncertain changes; mean detector scene 180 s. 37 internal visual steps, ~6.3 picture changes/min; continuous movement also occurs between steps. |
| Script | 1,024 spoken words in 6:00; 179 wpm overall, 222 wpm while talking; 53 sentences averaging 19.3 words; 4 questions. |
| Voice | Low-register, animated, patient educator; conversational curiosity and deliberate emphasis. |
| On screen | Almost entirely code-like 2D motion graphics: characters, car, axes, plots, braces, numeric labels. No filmed presenter. |
| Captions | No word-by-word subtitles in the sampled frames; instructional labels and equations appear near the object they describe. |
| Sound | Brief ~71 BPM musical opening to 0:15 (tempo estimate); dry narration and nearly silent gaps afterward. −18.6 LUFS integrated, −1.7 dBFS true peak. |
| Structure | 8 teaching beats; excerpt reaches the small-interval graph setup at 5:31; full-video resolution and any end CTA are outside the analysed portion. |
