Curiosity as a Kinetic Idea
A narrated 2D idea explainer that turns abstract claims into drawn words, diagrams and scene-changing visual metaphors.
Field notes / why it works
A word draws itself from 0:00 to 0:04, creating a visual completion hook before the first spoken claim at 0:05. The largest replay peak, 0:06.1–0:06.8, matches a blue splash and oversized yellow keyword; later, a node network at 0:28 and a lightbulb figure at 0:31 make the causal argument visible. Only five detected shots support 16 internal graphic steps, so motion and type keep a 67-second explanation active without frantic cutting.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A 67-second, landscape kinetic-type explainer turns one abstract idea into a sequence of drawings and typographic transformations. It starts with a word being written by motion (0:00–0:04), names a memorable metaphor at 0:05, builds a cause-and-effect argument through 0:38, then moves into wider consequences with a visual scene change at 0:50.
Why it works
- The first three seconds contain no speech or cuts, but a coloured brushstroke gradually resolves into a word; the viewer watches for completion.
- The memorable premise arrives as the most-replayed region, 0:06.1–0:06.8: a drawn word is swept into a blue field and replaced with oversized yellow keyword type.
- The images explain the claims: a network of connected points at 0:28, a lightbulb-headed figure at 0:31, and a conveyor-to-rocket-to-Earth sequence at 0:40–1:04.

| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · 640×360 measured · 25 fps · 67.0 s |
| Pace | 5 detected shots, 4 cuts, 3.6–5.4 cuts/min including uncertain changes at 0:49.8–0:50.2; 16 in-shot steps, about 17.9 picture changes/min; mean shot 13.39 s |
| Script | 168 spoken words; 170 wpm over runtime, about 201 wpm while speaking; 9 sentences averaging 18.7 words; no questions; about 4.2 “you” uses per 100 words |
| Voice | One animated, thoughtful adult narrator in a medium register; declarative, with mostly falling sentence ends |
| On screen | 100% designed 2D motion graphics and kinetic typography; no presenter, live-action b-roll, or interface footage |
| Captions | Selective keyword pops, not verbatim subtitles: large condensed uppercase words paired with smaller handwritten script |
| Sound | Quiet tonal bed measured about 16.5 dB under voice; no clearly measurable cut-synced effects; −17 LUFS integrated, −2.1 dBFS true peak |
| Structure | 6 beats: write-on → metaphor → objection/turn → compounding explanation → work-world stakes → conclusion; no explicit CTA |
