Natural Disaster Graphs That Play Their Data
Six sonified disaster charts animate in a fixed vertical layout, changing topic, colour and scale every four seconds.
Field notes / why it works
The premise appears on frame one and the first line starts tracing within 0.25 s, making the sound-and-data experiment legible immediately. One locked layout supports six four-second comparisons, while colour, icon, unit and timbre resets at 0:04, 0:08, 0:12, 0:16 and 0:20 renew attention without cuts; commenters singled out specific spike years.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A vertical, black-background motion graphic asks viewers to imagine data as sound, then runs six related line charts in four-second bursts. Each coloured line grows left to right while a year and value counter follow its moving endpoint; the striking peaks supply the payoff without a narrator.
Why it works
- The first frame states the experiment in a white pill, and the earthquake plot begins moving within 0.25 s. By 2.75 s the entire 2000–2024 line is visible, so the promise has an immediate demonstration.
- A stable layout makes six datasets comparable despite 0 cuts. The category, colour, pictogram, scale, and line reset at 0:04, 0:08, 0:12, 0:16, and 0:20.
- Exact years and values reward scrutiny: the first plot calls out its 2004 and 2011 magnitude peaks, while comments pick out individual spike years in later charts.
Plate 02 / Format card
| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube Short · 9:16, measured 360×640 at 30 fps · 24.0 s |
| Pace | 1 continuous graphic shot, 0 cuts/min, 5 internal resets = 12.5 major picture changes/min; six 4 s chart sections |
| Script | No planned narration. A five-word automatic transcript has low confidence and is not reliable evidence of speech. |
| Voice | None required; any faint speech-like syllables belong to the loud audio bed (inferred). |
| On screen | 100% animated infographic; no people, footage, or conventional subtitles |
| Captions | Persistent headline, chart titles, live year/value readout, tiny axis and source labels |
| Sound | Loud, rhythmic tonal bed and chart-linked tones (sound mapping inferred); measured −6.9 LUFS integrated, −0.5 dBFS true peak |
| Structure | Six four-second datasets; payoff is each completed shape and its extremes; no explicit call to action |
