Systems Thinking Through an Animated Healthcare Case
A continuous hand-drawn explainer turns a healthcare error into a layered causal map.
Field notes / why it works
The film makes a broad pressure visible through a pump and wheel by 0:08, then grounds the stakes in a large daily incident figure around 0:24. A human-scale medication case begins at 1:24, and the layered causal map from roughly 2:15–3:04 gives viewers a visual way to compare a narrow fix with system-level interventions; the most-replayed segment at 0:35.4–0:37.8 coincides with the first incident investigation scene.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A calm, illustrated educational film starts with a familiar public problem, shows why a single-person explanation fails, then uses one concrete case to expose the wider system. The camera travels through one expanding black-and-cyan drawing; narration supplies the logic while labels, arrows, figures, and documents make it visible.
Why it works
- The opening title sits on white for roughly three seconds, then the narrator names a widely felt pressure at 0:03; a simple pump and overloaded wheel visualize that pressure by 0:08.
- A large “100” statistic and incident perimeter at 0:24–0:40 convert abstract stakes into scale. The most-replayed window, 0:35.4–0:37.8, falls as a character enters that incident space and the film starts revealing contributing factors.
- The medication case starts at 1:24, then a more complex systems map occupies roughly 2:15–3:04. The viewer can compare a narrow corrective action with a network of possible changes.

|---|---|
| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · 640×360 source · 25 fps · 235 s |
| Pace | 2 detected shots, 1 confirmed cut at 3:27.2; 0.3–2.0 cuts/min including uncertain changes. 10 measured internal graphic steps; 2.8 measured picture changes/min. The artwork moves within those long shots. |
| Script | 460 spoken words · 119 wpm across runtime, about 152 wpm while speaking · 27 sentences averaging 17 words · one question in measured speech. |
| Voice | One low-register, animated, measured narrator; documentary educator archetype. |
| On screen | Approximately 90% continuous hand-drawn motion graphics and diagrams, then approximately 10% illustrated close/credits; no filmed presenter or screen recording. |
| Captions | No running subtitles baked into the artwork. Short labels and occasional headline cards are part of the diagram. |
| Sound | Dry narration with near-silent gaps under speech; end-credit music is uncertain. Measured −18.7 LUFS integrated and −1.6 dBFS true peak. |
| Structure | Stakes → feedback loop → single-cause critique → patient case → conventional response → system map → long-term benefit → closing invitation and credits. |
