A Bar-Chart Race Through Website History
A six-minute, single-shot chart animates website traffic rankings from 1996 to 2019, turning brand overtakes into the plot.
Field notes / why it works
The chart starts immediately in January 1996, showing a clear leader and inviting the viewer to predict who will overtake it. Smooth rank swaps and recognizable logos make the reversal around 1:46–1:51 especially watchable; that interval is the strongest replay peak. A second shift around 4:01–4:13 brings newer platforms into contention without changing the familiar layout.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A ranked horizontal bar chart runs through roughly two decades of website traffic without a presenter, a cut, or a spoken explanation. The date, lengths, ranks, values, and logos do the storytelling: familiar names arrive, overtake incumbents, and sometimes vanish.
Why it works
- The first frame already shows a race in January 1996, with AOL far ahead of Yahoo; the viewer can start predicting the winner immediately (0:00–0:03).
- The same fixed layout makes each reversal legible. Yahoo moves past AOL around 1:46–1:48, the strongest replay peak (1:46–1:51).
- Logos and exact numbers make the race recognizable and specific; the late 2007 to 2009 frames show Google taking the lead and Facebook/YouTube climbing (4:01–4:33).
