The Case for Keeping Snow Days
A witty stick figure advocacy explainer turns a school policy into a personal loss and a campaign call.
Field notes / why it works
The snow filled window and two word opening establish a shared memory immediately, then the policy threat arrives by 0:10. Only 27 shots carry 3:29, but 46 changes within shots keep the illustrated argument active; the child centered comic turn at 1:51–1:53 is the strongest replayed moment. The final demand follows the emotional cost and sits on a nearly 19 second snowy tableau.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A narrator opens on a familiar small pleasure, then reveals that an apparently sensible institution may remove it. Flat stick figure animation turns the policy into a sequence of comic scenes, escalates to its emotional cost, and finishes with a direct rallying call.
Why it works
- The first second gives a universally legible winter image and a two word topic; the threat lands by 0:10.
- The art literalizes abstract lines: a child is physically pulled at 0:20, administrators appear as a row of duplicates at 1:23, and a device mediates a child's day at 2:47.
- The emotional turn at 1:45 and comic proof at 1:51–1:53 coincide with the strongest replay peak; the final ask is held on a snowy tableau from 3:09.
Plate 02 / Format card
| Platform · aspect · length | YouTube · 16:9 · 640×360 source · 30 fps · 209 s |
| Pace | 27 shots, 26 confirmed cuts, 7.5–8.3 cuts/min with uncertain changes; 46 within shot changes, about 20.7 total picture changes/min; mean 7.74 s, median 5.43 s |
| Script | 527 spoken words, 165 wpm overall and 178 while speaking; 37 sentences averaging 14.2 words; five questions; 3.4 uses of “you” per 100 words |
| Voice | One animated, dry, conversational mid register narrator; alternates fond recollection, mock bureaucratic confidence, and indignation |
| On screen | Nearly all original flat 2D animation: stick figure scenes, rooms, snowy landscapes, schools, signs, symbols, and a mock device interface; no live footage |
| Captions | No running subtitles; occasional handwritten speech balloons, protest text, short labels, and a hashtag on art |
| Sound | Continuous quiet tonal music like bed, roughly 18.6 dB under speech; no reliable cut SFX; −16.4 LUFS measured, 0.1 dBFS true peak measured |
| Structure | Nostalgic hook → policy threat → comic objections → lived experience → institutional critique → child centered stakes → call to action |
