Field notes / why it works

The first 9.6 seconds hold on an unpolished rainy yard, making the finished-space reveal around 0:39 easy to understand and satisfying. Thirty-seven shots condense digging, building, planting, and styling into visible proof; the fastest run lands at 0:30–0:35 before the edit relaxes into longer after views. Small serif story cards keep the five-year arc clear without a spoken narrator.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A personal transformation story starts with a long, plain view of the unpromising original space, then condenses years of work into increasingly quick DIY glimpses. Small editorial text cards carry the story without narration; the final third lets the finished space breathe before a soft follow invitation.

Why it works

  • The first 9.6 seconds commit to the sparse, rain-soaked before. That gives the lush after at 38.9–59.1 seconds a clear visual contrast.
  • Process footage turns a makeover into earned proof: digging at 9.6–14.3, decking at 14.3–17.1, soil and turf at 17.1–20.9, then building, planting, and finishing in rapid succession to 38.9.
  • Short chapters keep the viewer oriented while pace changes: 37 measured shots, with the densest five-second run at 30–35 seconds (8 cuts), then longer finished-space shots.

Pace37 measured shots, 36 cuts (36.5/min); including uncertain changes, 36.5–49.7 cuts/min. Mean shot 1.6 s, median 0.87 s; opening shot 9.57 s.
ScriptApproximately 9 short on-screen story cards, rather than spoken narration. The detected 85-word transcript is lyrics from the song, so 90 measured wpm does not describe the story's delivery.
VoiceNo speaking narrator. A high-register sung vocal is part of the music.
On screenNearly all personal live-action footage: bare yard, people doing DIY, detail and wide views of the finished yard. No talking head or screen capture.
CaptionsSmall, centered serif story cards; black type on warm-white boxes during process, white unboxed type over the before and after views. These are narrative overlays, not speech captions.
SoundContinuous song with vocals; no clear cut sound effects. Measured integrated loudness −32.2 LUFS and true peak −15.9 dBFS in the captured file.
StructureBefore → renovation context → cumulative work → vision taking shape → finished reveal → work-in-progress note → follow CTA. Reveal begins about 0:39, CTA about 0:55.
