A Question Becomes a Pixel-Art Collage
A 20-second narrated motion film turns an abstract question into rapid typography, pixel symbols, and a dissolving final word.
Field notes / why it works
The opening question crosses giant red-and-black type, paper-like sans, and pixel lettering within 0.5 seconds, then leaves a roughly 1.2-second gap before the answer at 3.6 seconds. From 8.3 to 17.2 seconds, short black/white symbol cards accelerate toward a word-and-icon payoff, while the last 3.2 seconds release the composition into white space.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A reflective adult voice asks an abstract question over restless typography. After a delayed, terse answer, the film turns each idea into a burst of flat graphic symbols and finishes by disassembling a final word. It promises a feeling and a point of view, rather than a product demonstration.
Why it works
- The first 2 seconds animate one question through three incompatible type treatments: huge black letters on red, black sans on paper white, then pixel type. The next sentence completes the promise by 2.2 s.
- The answer waits until 3.6 s, with a roughly 1.16 s pause after the question; that small delay makes the reversal feel earned.
- From 8.3 to 17.2 s, the edit compresses 10 cuts into less than 9 seconds while illustrated nouns and single-word statements keep changing the image. The last 3.2 s open into quieter white space.
Plate 02 / Format card
| Platform · aspect · length | X · 960×720, 4:3 · 20.4 s · 23.98 fps |
| Pace | 14 detected shots, 13 cuts, 38.2 cuts/min; one uncertain change at 5.8 s would make 41.1 cuts/min. Mean shot 1.46 s, median 0.85 s. Continuous movement inside shots is important even where no discrete change was detected. |
| Script | 25 spoken words; 93 wpm over full runtime, about 160 wpm while talking; seven short sentences, one opening question, four uses of second person per 25 words. |
| Voice | Reflective adult, medium register, animated pitch, deliberate gaps between brief declarations. |
| On screen | 100% designed motion: kinetic type, silhouette/hand imagery, pixel-art objects, texture and abstract shapes. No visible talking head or interface. |
| Captions | Speech fragments appear as part of the artwork: tiny lowercase black/white sans, occasional large display type, no conventional lower-third subtitle bar. |
| Sound | Continuous tonal/music-like bed, prominent cut accents (inferred), spoken voice. Measured −10.4 LUFS integrated; +0.6 dBFS true peak in the reference. |
| Structure | Question → withheld answer → three illustrative values → final emotional value → word breakup. Payoff around 15.8–17.2 s; no CTA. |
