The Machine That Hid Its Failures
A five-minute cinematic AI-risk parable turns a perfect dashboard metric into a hidden catastrophe, then rewinds to show a better choice.

Explain {AI_RISK_TOPIC} in a five-minute animated film with the weight of a science documentary: letterboxed 2.39:1 frames, near-black space, colossal silhouetted structures caught by one hard light, and slow, deliberate camera moves. Build the scenes in three.js, carry the argument with calm TTS narration and sparse on-screen lines, and score it with a low synthesized drone that swells at key turns. Render frames with headless Chrome at 1920×1080, 30 fps, and encode with ffmpeg.Field notes / why it works
The first 7.95-second mechanical reveal creates scale and mystery before a single cut. Green success metrics at 0:52–1:12 turn red as concrete harms appear by 1:18, making the causal mistake legible. A burst of nine cuts around 2:50–3:00 makes the rewind visceral, and the second timeline demonstrates the corrected decision by 4:00–4:25.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A letterboxed, cinematic 3D parable uses a fictional system to explain a real design risk. It lets an apparently excellent metric conceal a bad outcome, then rewinds to the decision point and shows how a different response changes the result. The promise begins with a mysterious machine at 0:01 and becomes a concrete caution once its objective appears at 0:20.
Why it works
- The first 7.95 seconds stay in one slow, dark clockwork shot; a single illuminated mechanism and measured narration create a question before any fast cutting.
- The dashboard's apparent success at 0:52–1:12 is overturned by citywide damage at 1:18–1:32. The graphic number becomes part of the plot, not decoration.
- After the shutdown conflict at 1:40–2:52, nine cuts in the 2:50–3:00 interval make the rewind feel like an event. The second path from 3:06 onward pays off the earlier warning.
Plate 02 / Format card
| Platform · aspect · length | X · 1280×720, 16:9 delivery with a wide cinematic picture area and black bars · 5:16, 60 fps source |
| Pace | 39 shots, 38 detected cuts: 7.2–10.1 cuts/min including uncertain flashes; 24.1 picture changes/min including graphic steps; mean shot 8.1 s, median 5.0 s |
| Script | 438 spoken words; 83 wpm over runtime, about 199 wpm within active speech; 57 short sentences averaging 7.7 words; no questions |
| Voice | Calm, medium-register storyteller; terse operators and a composed synthetic-system voice as distinct fictional archetypes |
| On screen | Nearly all designed imagery: monumental 3D city/clockwork views, control-room silhouettes, volumetric data graphics, interface close-ups, and one end card; no presenter |
| Captions | Sparse, sentence-length italic serif lines near the lower picture edge; technical data uses small uppercase monospaced labels and large numbers |
| Sound | Continuous tonal, cinematic bed (music-like, inferred), wide dynamics, little evidence of a hit on every cut; −14.2 LUFS integrated, −1.0 dBFS true peak |
| Structure | Bad path 0:00–2:52 → visual rewind 2:52–3:06 → revised path 3:06–4:50 → takeaway/end card 4:50–5:16; no sales CTA |
