Can Machines Think? An Animated AI Timeline
A code-rendered, voiceless history of AI that grows from one typed question into a changing 60-second visual timeline.
Field notes / why it works
A single cursor types a foundational question over 0:00–0:03, making the viewer wait for its completion. The film stays on one rendered canvas but introduces 20 major internal picture changes in 60 seconds; its paper, blue, green and magenta visual eras make the dates easy to follow. A bright reset at 0:52 and return to the question at 0:54 lead into a clean title payoff at 0:58.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A blinking cursor types a large question into darkness. A chronological procession of dates and small diagrams then answers it through changing visual eras, before returning to the question as a bright, clean title card. The promise begins with the typed question at 0:00–0:03; the specific AI-history subject becomes clear at 0:04–0:10.
Why it works
- The first 2.75 seconds reveal one question character by character, creating an open loop without narration or a busy opening.
- A year counter anchors each leap: paper-toned 1943–1958 at 0:04–0:11 gives way to blue winter imagery at 0:16, green computation at 0:22, purple neural-era visuals after 0:30, and a white present-day card at 0:52.
- At 0:54 the opening question returns in a new form; at 0:58 the final title resolves it. This gives a 60-second chronology a clear ending rather than stopping at the last date.
Plate 02 / Format card
| Platform · aspect · length | X · 1280×720, 16:9 · 60.0 s at 60 fps |
| Pace | One continuous rendered canvas, no confirmed cuts; 20 internal picture changes, about 20/min; nominal shot length 60 s. One uncertain change at 0:21.8 makes the cut estimate 0–1/min. |
| Script | On-screen text and year labels only; no reliable spoken words or WPM. The automated six-word transcript is low confidence and inconsistent with the visual presentation. |
| Voice | None confirmed; the visual sequence carries the explanation. |
| On screen | 100% code-style motion graphics: type, diagrams, particle fields, grid, timeline, and small explanatory labels. No visible presenter or live-action footage. |
| Captions | No speech subtitles. Use concise milestone labels and small supporting text. |
| Sound | Continuous tonal, music-like bed; measured −14.0 LUFS integrated and −1.5 dBFS true peak. Approximate 121 BPM analysis has only moderate confidence. Individual effects are not confirmed. |
| Structure | Typed question → historical milestones → modern acceleration → present-day turn → question/title payoff. No explicit CTA. |
