The Harbor Dancer Becomes a Painting

A code-painted music film turns a tiny figure in dark water into a dancer, a color grid, and finally a vanishing gallery artwork.

Starter prompt / by Refs

The creator shared no short prompt. This is ours for making a film like it with Claude.

Create a one-minute artistic interpretation of {MUSICIAN} as a quiet, moody animated short, drawn entirely in code on an HTML canvas. Set it in a still harbor at night: dark wooden pilings, a distant industrial skyline with a few warm windows, and a figure with the artist's signature hair surfacing from the water inside spreading ripple rings. Use a painterly pixel texture, a teal-and-amber palette, faint scanline glitches and slow camera drifts across a few scenes. Render frames with headless Chrome and encode 1920×1080 with ffmpeg.

Field notes / why it works

At 0:00, a tiny warm-colored head and pale ripple rings focus attention inside a vast dark harbor. Five cuts around 0:19–0:23.5 multiply the dancer from one colorful panel into a dense grid, then a slower stage sequence resets the pace. The painted-sky turn near 0:32 and gallery-frame reveal at 0:47 reframe the performance before the character vanishes around 0:54.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A tiny red-haired figure surfaces in a nearly black industrial harbor, then rises into a theatrical dance. A sung pop track carries the film through a sudden block of bright color, a stage, a painted night sky, and a final reveal that the performance was inside a gallery picture. The promise is visual curiosity in frame one: what is the little figure doing in this vast, still water?

Why it works

  • At 0:00, the person occupies only a small patch near the lower center; concentric pale ripples and empty dark water make the figure immediately legible and odd.
  • The 0:19–0:23.5 sequence compresses five cuts into about four seconds, replacing the slow theatrical hold with increasingly dense 2-, 3-, and 4-column color grids.
  • At 0:32 the stage becomes a swirling painted night; at 0:47 the camera reveals a gold picture frame, and by 0:54 the performer has vanished from the artwork. These turns reward a full watch.

VoiceBright, animated, high-register masculine singing archetype; original performance required
On screen100% designed animation: harbor/arch, color-panel grids, theater, painted landscape, framed gallery artwork
CaptionsNone; a small, mostly illegible gallery placard is the only visible lettering near the end
SoundContinuous, music-forward pop song with lead vocal; about −12.9 LUFS integrated, −0.6 dBFS true peak
