The Steep Part: An AI Future Memoir
A four-minute illustrated future memoir uses an aging fictional witness, dated chapters, and a recurring light motif to turn 50 years of AI change into a personal story.
Starter prompt / by Refs
The creator shared no short prompt. This is ours for making a film like it with Claude.
Animate a four-minute film called {TITLE} that imagines how {FIELD} unfolds from 2026 to 2076, decade by decade, with a hard middle stretch and a hopeful ending. Style: layered flat hills in violet and magenta, a glowing line-art sun with orbit rings, gold arcs, film grain, and a small lone figure who returns in every chapter. Use a year counter, bold condensed chapter titles and italic serif subtitles. Build it in Remotion at 1920×1080, 30 fps, narrate with a TTS voice and compose an ambient score in code.Field notes / why it works
The first 3 seconds show only a faint red pulse, delaying the first spoken line until 0:04.2 and the full title until about 0:19. Chapter years 2028 around 0:44, 2036 around 1:51, and 2076 around 3:20 make the 50-year leap easy to follow, while the small recurring witness gives the scale a human anchor. A moral question at 1:59 redirects the film from escalating capability toward human choice, which pays off in the direct address at 3:43.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A small fictional witness narrates a vast technological or social change as memories from childhood to later life. Date cards provide chapter markers; luminous diagrams, silhouetted people, and recurring curved lines make huge abstractions feel like one life. The promise is a complete imagined future, including its difficult middle and a hopeful ending, in four minutes.
Why it works
- The opening withholds context: a dark red pulse fills 0:00–0:03, speech starts at 0:04.2, and the film title appears around 0:19. This invites the viewer to decode the image before the premise becomes explicit.
- Chapter years 2028 (about 0:44), 2036 (about 1:51), and 2076 (about 3:20) make a 50-year span navigable. A brief “2136” science graphic at 2:16 conveys a century's worth of progress rather than a chronological chapter. A small witness recurs beside the glowing motif at 1:09, 2:04, and 2:51, giving the time jumps continuity.
- The story turns from work and social fear (0:27–1:33) to a moral question (1:59–2:14), then to choice and abundance (2:19–3:51). The closing direct address at 3:43 transfers responsibility to the viewer.

| Platform · aspect · length | X · 1280×720, 16:9 · 4:00 at 30 fps |
| Pace | 32 detected shots, 31 cuts = 7.7 cuts/min; possible upper bound 13.2 with uncertain changes; 39 internal steps; about 17.5 clear picture changes/min; mean shot 7.5 s, median 4.54 s |
| Script | 377 spoken words; 99 wpm over total runtime, 211 wpm during speech; 41 short sentences averaging 9.2 words; one question |
| Voice | Reflective first-person fictional witness, medium pitch, intimate and increasingly assured |
| On screen | Nearly all authored 2D motion graphics/illustrated scenes; no visible talking head or screen recording. Wide landscapes and city views alternate with close symbolic inserts and chapter cards. |
| Captions | Small white full-sentence subtitles along the lower edge; occasional large editorial words and condensed year cards are separate from subtitles. |
| Sound | Continuous low tonal bed, roughly 11 dB below voice; no clearly isolated effect on every cut; −15.9 LUFS integrated, −1.7 dBFS true peak |
| Structure | Seven broad story beats: mystery → premise → acceleration → disruption → values → abundance → direct-address coda; no sales CTA |
