The Mongol Conquests as a Living Atlas
A silent, continuous capture of an interactive historical atlas that compresses decades of territorial change into a moving map and dated event cards.
Field notes / why it works
The first frame states the subject with a large year, highlighted territory, event card, and visible playhead, so the viewer immediately understands the time-traveling map. Across 26.8 seconds, one uncut interface widens from north China to Eurasia and refreshes at six measured UI changes, including major event updates around 14.6 and 20.2 seconds. The persistent date and timeline keep the shifting geography legible without narration.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A full-height historical map plays forward like a miniature interactive exhibit. A persistent date card, glowing territory boundary, event popup, and bottom timeline turn decades of change into a legible 27-second journey. The frame itself is the product demonstration; there is no presenter or narration.
Why it works
- The opening frame already contains the visual promise: a named atlas, a big year (1212), a highlighted frontier, and an event card. The viewer can understand the mechanism without an intro.
- The playhead advances continuously while the map changes scale from north China at 0:00 to Central Asia by 0:03.8 and most of Eurasia by 0:20.5. Each expansion makes the next date worth watching.
- Six measured internal picture changes at 6.4, 9.8, 10.8, 14.6, 20.2, and 23.0 s refresh the same uncut interface. The event card repeatedly changes what the viewer should inspect.
