A Mosaic Comes Apart and Rebuilds Itself

An 80-second wordless WebGL mosaic film whose tiles become moving figures, a dark sky, and a swirling sphere before returning to a flat image.

Field notes / why it works

A black frame reveals an intricate gold-and-glass panel by about 0:02, then moving tile silhouettes upset that still image near 0:11. With no cuts across 80 seconds, the palette change at 0:39 and whole-frame tile storm around 1:04–1:13 refresh the visual premise before the panel reforms at 1:16–1:18.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A flat, antique-looking tessera mosaic appears fixed until individual pieces lift and become moving figures. The viewer watches the image repeatedly switch between picture and material: sea-colored motion, a dark celestial passage, a tile storm, and a rebuilt image. The promise arrives visually by about 0:11, when the first large silhouette interrupts the placid panel.

Why it works

  • A black-to-image reveal starts at 0:00.6 and reaches a readable gold panel by about 0:02; the first picture change is only 0.55 seconds in.
  • The same little tiles form both background and figures. Motion at 0:11–0:34 makes the apparent wall feel physically alive without a cut.
  • The second half escalates: a dark field at 0:38.6, a bright moving creature around 0:49, a tile storm from about 1:04, and a rebuilt panel at 1:16–1:18.8.
