Solaris: Interfaces Generated in Real Time
An editorial launch film that moves from retro software packaging to varied interactive interface proof, then closes on a spare thesis card.
Field notes / why it works
Five vintage software covers cycle through the opening 2.75 seconds, making the limitation tangible before the 0:06 question. A pause sets up the 0:12 reveal; from 0:23 to 1:00, varied interface examples turn the concept into visible input-and-response proof. The white editorial frame unifies 17 shots, while the final 11 seconds reduce the argument to a plain thesis.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A narrated, widescreen research launch film begins with obsolete-looking software packaging on a white field, asks whether the medium can behave differently, then reveals a new system through a sequence of visual examples. The promise arrives as a question around 0:06 and becomes explicit at 0:12–0:18; the close reduces the whole argument to one short thesis on white.
Why it works
- Five old software covers appear within the first 2.75 s, building the “fixed software” premise visually before the product appears.
- The reveal at 0:12 follows a roughly 2 s pause and shifts from archive objects into a human and working interfaces; the picture finally supplies the answer to the opening question.
- The middle shows several kinds of response—food, planets, image selection, room, light, and street scenes—before abstract implications at 1:00. The viewer gets concrete evidence before the claim expands.
Plate 02 / Format card
| Platform · aspect · length | X · 1280×720, 16:9 · 82.7 s at 24 fps |
| Pace | 17 shots; 16 cuts = 11.6 cuts/min; 22 changes within shots; 27.6 total picture changes/min; mean shot 4.86 s, median 3.21 s |
| Script | 183 measured words; 139 wpm across the full film, about 181 wpm while speaking; 16 sentences averaging 11.4 words |
| Voice | Low-register adult narrator; clear, assured, measured, then brisk through the proof sequence |
| On screen | About 12 s retro package/film illustration; about 48 s interface and generated-scene demonstrations; about 12 s contextual footage/research imagery; about 11 s typographic close (approximate from the shot sheet) |
| Captions | No running subtitles. Small native interface labels and a final black sans-serif thesis on white. |
| Sound | Continuous tonal bed (music-like, inferred from measurement); no reliable evidence of effects tied to cuts; measured −24.9 LUFS integrated, −7.5 dBFS true peak |
| Structure | Old limit → question → named reveal → mechanism → varied proof → larger implication → thesis. No spoken CTA. |
