Routine: A Suburban Time Loop
An AI-generated narrative short turns a repeated morning into a surreal, escalating time loop.
Field notes / why it works
The first 2.1 seconds make an ordinary title ominous with a sunflower and moving fire. Matched breakfast, wardrobe, TV, coffee, and bed compositions recur at 1:07–1:26, making the time loop legible with little speech; the car at 1:54 and fires at 2:18–2:24 then escalate through familiar locations before the 2:33 reversal.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A 2:47 suburban time-loop short opens on a symbolic wordmark, builds one highly legible morning routine, then repeats the same props and compositions as the protagonist realizes the day is resetting. The repeated images let the film spend little dialogue on explanation; increasingly extreme attempts to break the loop supply the escalation.
Why it works
- The first 2.1 seconds establish a visual thesis: a giant sky-filled title contains a flower and fire, suggesting ordinary life and danger before the story begins.
- At 1:07–1:26, breakfast, wardrobe, television, coffee, and phone echoes make the second cycle recognizable without explanatory narration.
- The escalation is visible in a glance: a car is inside the living room at 1:58, fuel is poured at 2:13, multiple rooms burn by 2:24, and the final bed close-up switches from a smile to a scream at 2:33.

| Reference specification | |
|---|---|
| Platform · aspect · length | X · 1280 × 720, 16:9 · 166.7 s · 50 fps |
| Pace | 36 shots, 35 detected cuts; 12.6–15.1 cuts/min allowing uncertain changes; 24.5 picture changes/min; mean 4.63 s and median 3.4 s/shot |
| Script | 52 transcribed spoken words, about 24 wpm across the entire film; about 160 wpm during dialogue clusters. Eight words were low confidence, so exact wording is less reliable than the visual story. |
| Voice | Brief, low-register, animated diegetic broadcast and phone-style speech; no continuous narrator |
| On screen | Approximately 1 title shot, 33 narrative shots, 2 credit cards; locked wides, overhead routine inserts, and face close-ups recur |
| Captions | No dialogue subtitles; on-screen words are the opening wordmark, a TV news lower-third, and closing credits |
| Sound | A tonal bed is measured between dialogue; no clear pattern of whooshes or hits on cuts; integrated −19.8 LUFS and measured true peak +0.3 dBFS |
| Structure | Title → baseline morning → warning → apparent escape/reset → repeated morning → successive failed resets → destructive attempt → reversal → credits; no CTA |
