The Hairy Ball Theorem, from puzzle to proof

A tactile 3D math teaser turns a furry sphere into a viewer puzzle, then previews a deeper proof.

Field notes / why it works

The strange concept name and descending fuzzy sphere create a recognizable visual hook in the first second, while continuous rotation makes the rule tangible by 0:15. A direct puzzle at 0:26 renews attention, and the formal proof preview at 0:51–1:11 gives viewers a reason to follow the full-video call at 1:11. The 76-second cut has just three detected shots but 14 internal picture changes, keeping the explanation visually active without a rapid montage.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A calm but quick narrator names an oddly memorable concept while a single tactile 3D object moves on black. The object makes an abstract rule intuitive; a puzzle lets viewers test it; a final visual bridge promises a deeper proof and application in the full lesson.

Why it works

  • The first second stacks a peculiar title with a huge descending fuzzy sphere; by 1.5 seconds the whole object and crisp title are visible, with no cut to dilute the image.
  • From about 5–25 seconds the same sphere demonstrates the constraint through motion. The diagram changes with the narration instead of adding unrelated footage.
  • The puzzle card at 27–36 seconds asks viewers to solve the one-point exception. A formal statement at 51–56 seconds and proof preview from 56 seconds open a second loop; the full-video call appears at 71.4 seconds.

Platform · aspect · lengthX video · 720 × 1280, 9:16 · 76 seconds · 30 fps
Pace3 measured shots; 2 detected cuts, or 1.6–2.4 cuts/min allowing one uncertain change; 14 internal steps and about 12.6 total picture changes/min; 25.32-second mean shot
Script255 spoken words; 217 wpm overall, 246 while speaking; 9 sentences averaging 28.3 words; no spoken questions; “you” about 3.1 times per 100 words
VoiceLow-register, animated, clear explanatory narrator; curious and lightly amused
On screenEntirely designed visuals: mostly animated hairy sphere, briefly a 3D working view, puzzle graphic, simple character illustration, and proof diagrams; no visible presenter
CaptionsNo running subtitles. Sparse off-white serif title, puzzle, theorem, proof, and end-card text; one dusty red emphasis phrase
SoundDry narration; no measurable music bed under pauses; −16.8 LUFS integrated, −3.8 dBFS true peak
StructureOdd name → tactile rule → interactive puzzle → why it matters → formal/proof preview → full-video bridge
