Ukiyo-e Wave Becomes a WebGL Diorama

A silent WebGL artwork morphs between a layered wave and mountain scene through depth, parallax, and particles.

Field notes / why it works

The complete wave is readable at 0:00, then its first particle dissolve reveals a contrasting mountain landscape by 0:02.75. The return near 0:07.5 and another breakup around 0:11.2–0:14.1 reward continued watching without narration or captions. Just one measured cut in 19.7 seconds lets the depth and material change carry the spectacle.

Plate 01 / The format in one breath

A single familiar, paper-textured image floats in a black void, then breaks into tiny pieces and resolves as a different layered landscape. The demonstration makes the depth transformation itself the story: the viewer sees the apparent flat artwork acquire parallax, dissolve, and reassemble. There is no speech, text, logo, or music; all attention rests on the visual metamorphosis.

Why it works

  • The complete, high-contrast artwork is legible immediately at 0:00, so the transformation has a clear before state.
  • By 0:01.5 the wave is visibly shedding particles; at 0:02.75 a mountain landscape has replaced it. The short delay makes the reveal rewarding.
  • The reverse movement around 0:07.5 and the second breakup around 0:11.2–0:14.1 turn a one-off effect into a repeatable visual cycle.
