A New Start for Windows
A nostalgic letter to the Windows Start button turns a fast computer-memory montage into a late Raycast for Windows reveal.
Field notes / why it works
A familiar Start button appears within the first second, then a typed letter at 1.8 seconds creates a personal mystery before any product pitch. The 31-shot, mostly sub-two-second memory-to-error montage makes the old workflow's promise and friction tangible; a single 12.12-second final shot slows the pace for the Raycast reveal around 47–48 seconds.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A 53-second launch film speaks to an old interface as if it were a person. Warm memories become frustration, then the new product appears as the answer. The product name is withheld until the final seconds, so the emotional story carries the announcement.
Why it works
- The first second pairs a familiar Start button with a cloudy, nostalgic background; a typed letter begins at 0:02, creating a specific mystery before any feature pitch.
- From about 0:04–0:30, 20-plus short memory and computer clips make the narrator's relationship with the old interface visible. The measured median shot is 1.21 s.
- Blue screens, errors, and shutdown imagery at 0:25–0:40 make the problem felt. Then the film slows into one 12.12 s final shot, allowing the new product reveal at roughly 0:47–0:48 to land.
Plate 02 / Format card
| Platform · aspect · length | X · 1280×720, 16:9 · 52.8 s at 24 fps |
| Pace | 31 shots, 30 cuts, 34.1 cuts/min; 44.3 total picture changes/min; mean 1.7 s, median 1.21 s; last shot 12.12 s |
| Script | 99 spoken words; 128 wpm across runtime, 171 wpm while speaking; seven measured sentences, no questions |
| Voice | One low-register, reflective adult narrator; an intimate letter read with measured warmth, then resolve |
| On screen | Roughly half archival-style computer, game, web, and human-memory montage; half designed title, error, abstract logo, and product UI. Approximate from sheets. |
| Captions | No running subtitles. Sparse typewritten letter text early, legacy interface text inside footage, and a quiet final product title. |
| Sound | Tonal music-like bed, roughly −28.3 dBFS and about 7.1 dB below speech by the measurement heuristic; no clear repeated cut SFX; −16.4 LUFS integrated, −1.3 dBFS true peak |
| Structure | Nostalgic address → memories → friction → break with old workflow → abstract transition → product reveal; no spoken CTA, no loop |
