An Astronaut’s Illustrated Leap
A 20-second hand-drawn launch film turns a cosmic journey into a delayed three-word title reveal.
Field notes / why it works
The first frame establishes a tactile world with one huge coral planet and tiny contrasting objects; the character starts entering around 0:02, before the first cut at 0:04.08. Framing then shifts from close-up at 0:05.1 to full-body travel at 0:08.0 and a destination wide shot by 0:13.3. Only three cuts in 20 seconds let the animation breathe, while the large title at about 0:16.7 gives the journey a clear payoff.
Plate 01 / The format in one breath
A small illustrated character crosses an enormous, playful world and arrives above a tangible destination. The film withholds its written point until a three-word, hand-drawn payoff near 0:16.7; a repeated, spare vocal phrase supplies rhythm while the visuals carry the story.
Why it works
- The first 2 seconds establish scale with one huge coral planet, a small mint ringed planet and tiny stars; the character only begins entering at about 0:02.
- The framing widens in stages: character close-up at 0:05.1, full body at 0:08.0, destination at 0:13.3. Each change answers part of the visual question.
- Three cuts in 20 seconds leave room for continuous hand-drawn movement, then the large end phrase at 0:16.7 gives the journey a clear finish.
Plate 02 / Format card
| Platform · aspect · length | X · 16:9, 1280 × 720 · 20.0 s at 24 fps |
| Pace | 4 shots, 3 cuts, 9 cuts/min; mean shot 5.01 s, median 4.0 s; longest shot 10.04 s. The cut detector found no discrete graphic steps, though artwork moves within shots. |
| Script | 22 detected vocal words, about 70 wpm over the full film and 91 wpm during vocal activity; a short line recurs three times. Transcription has 7 low-confidence words. |
| Voice | Low-register, rhythmic vocal refrain; melodic quality is inferred from the repeated wording and music-forward mix. No presenter. |
| On screen | 100% drawn animation: cosmic establishing view → character close-up → full-body float → wide destination and title. |
| Captions | None. One large, rough uppercase title appears late. |
| Sound | Continuous tonal/music-like bed, roughly as prominent as the detected vocal; no specific effects are confirmed. Source: −15.3 LUFS integrated, 0.0 dBFS true peak. |
| Structure | Four visual beats; title payoff at about 0:16.7; no in-video CTA. |
